  1. This is fantastic work, Bruno. Its great to have it on the Web.

  2. I think the unconfirmed Chicago shows were aborted after Big Brother's disastrous experience. Jefferson Airplane and Big Brother played a place called Mother Blues, a connection found through Ron Polte (QMS manager), and the Dead and QMS were supposed to follow.

Once it went South with BB, the other SF bands didn't make the trip.

  3. Great job Bruno - and Corry is correct about the Chicago shows. Here are a couple of additions as well:
September 2-3, 1966 - IES Hall, San Jose, CA with The Fugitives and Hilton Trolley [this was a New Wave Promotions show with a John H Myers poster for].
August 26, 1966 Fillmore Auditorium, San Francisco, CA with The Great Society and Sopwith Camel (filling in for the 13th Floor Elevators who were contractually blocked from performing). Country Joe and the Fish filled in for the Elevators on the 27th.
October 8, 1966 This show was moved from the Pauley Ballroom to the Greek Theatre.

  4. An addition: over at Dead.net, Alan Scheckter mentions an October 11, 1968 QMS gig in Chico. I suspect it was at the Silver Dollar Fairgrounds, though I am not sure that's 100% clear from the information available. Ace of Cups also played. See his article in the Chico music scene at http://www.newsreview.com/chico/it-was-a-gas/content?oid=694453 for more.

  7. Good morning Bruno:
Another concert date for your listing. I saw QMS at the Foothills Arena in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, on 19 September 1971, in a double bill with Captain Beefheart (who I believe had also appeared at the preceding QMS concerts in Vancouver and Edmonton). Quite a show for a kid just arrived from Scotland a few months earlier!
    Regards

Here's another Quicksilver show to add. 12/16/73. QMS, with the Chambers bros opening up. Morris County College qymnasium.Randolph NJ. My 18th birthday. The cops kept keeping us away from the stage, until after the acid took effect! lol, after that it was a free for all. We ended up on stage, drinking beers with the band, and giving shotguns to Dino..."All during the show"

  15. I saw a show at a club called The Joint In The Woods, in Parsipany, NJ with a band that had John Nicholas on bass. I don't remember the date of the show. According to your research he was only w/QMS from 12/3/73 to 1/74. I've been trying to find the date for this show for a long time. I also recorded this show, & it sounds pretty good. This was a popular club in the mid '70s with shows like Bob Seger, B Springsteen, Marc Bolan, Peter Frampton, & Cactus. Hope this helps. Larry

    2. John Nicholas here. I remember that gig in Parsippany, NJ (not the exact day). Also, that was me, not Roger Stanton, playing on the DVD on Dec. 1, 1973 at Winterland. I was playing my Dan Armstrong plexi bass from my days with ESTUS.

    3. Thanks John, correct! So when you exactly joined the band? November 1973? before? If you can please keep in contact at my email: brunodoors@libero.it

      cheers,

  17. Excellent work here, and a few other gigs for you to add to this and Part II, with documentary evidence for each: 1/??/72 at Waterbury Palace Theater, Waterbury, CT (http://www.palacewaterbury.com/palace_bands/palace_bands.html, though not clear how this indicates the year), 9/14/73 at Columbia Music Hall, West Hartford, CT (http://www.ebay.com/itm/QUICKSILVER-MESSENGER-SERVICE-Concert-Ticket-Stub-W-HARTFORD-CT-9-14-73-COLUMBIA-/400823311847?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item5d52ee5de7&nma=true&si=zZCPToqyOYj%252Fged6sToIdN%252BTtlg%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557), and 2/4/76 at the Shaboo Inn, Willimantic, CT (http://www.photog.com/concerts/70sRockList.html).I also saw them in the summer of 1977 at Players Tavern in Westport, CT, though I can't tell you the exact date. On that summer tour, it was just Valenti and Duncan, and they hired Rick Wetzel (bass), Chris Myers (drums) and a keyboard player credited as "Captain Kirk," though Duncan mentioned his real name in the now hard-to-find interview conducted by John Barthel.

  20. Thx Bruno. Couple things. Cipollina showed up 12-31-71 and played first with Big Brother then the encore only with QMS.

Also I think your Freiberg Timeline is off a bit. He was definitely with QMS for quite some time after 7-3-71 although at some point he switched to organ.

About David Freiberg, well, actually everything you find here, correct or not, is my own personal research. I know Pete Frame's legendary family trees of course, but I know also that they are very old and definitely incorrect, so I never use them as my sources for all the family trees you see here or in my other blogs. About what you say, well, actually I'm confident David's last gig was on July 3, 1971, at least because he said that in every interview he did in the last 40 years, and also it was confirmed by my man Dale Ockerman was joined the band on keyboards on that same night. Also, to be honest, there's a possibility that actually David had already left the band at least one month earlier and then he maybe returned just to play the July 3 gig. I say this because I see a couple of photos of the band at a show in Houston on June 6, 1971 and on bass there was a Chinese guy (??). Well, maybe David was there too but on keyboards just as you said.

That was the Victory Theatre on Spadina Avenue - a former movie house and the last 'classic' burlesque venue in Toronto. They DID host some concerts for a while, and I'm pretty sure I saw Savoy Brown do 'Jack the Toad' there. I donno, man...it's all kinda fuzzy, eh?

  42. Quicksilver were filmed at a free Sonoma State College show for the "Go Ride the Music" TV program that was broadcast on 12/6/70.
The date of the show was 4/28/70.

The Petaluma Argus-Courier, 4/30/70, reported on various bands playing during the World Peace Festival being held at the college that week:
"Wednesday afternoon, [several local] bands played consecutively through the afternoon by the lake, and drew hundreds of students.
Tuesday, the word got around that the famous Quicksilver Messengers from San Francisco were making an unannounced appearance at the college and kids poured in after school from all over the area. Observers said up to 2,000 heard the band play.
The performance and the crowd was televised for a documentary KQED is making on the message of the country's music makers.
Today [Thursday]...music by the lake in the afternoon will include performances by Osceola, Maggie's Farm, Helix, and the Rhythm Dukes."
(from "SSC Jazz Workshop Marks Peace Fest," p.12)

Ralph Gleason wrote in an article on the show's broadcast:
"We were able to arrange for a free concert by Quicksilver at Sonoma State College on a gorgeous sunny afternoon in March during a special week-long peace program. It was a wild day.
One of the group had decided to quit and we didn't know if he would show up. There was a terrible hassle getting a piano for Nicky Hopkins. The electricity blew out three times in the opening number, but somehow we survived it all and got a lot of excellent footage of the band and the audience in that benign setting."
(from "The SF Rock Scene Revisited," San Francisco Examiner 12/6/70)

They had also filmed a bit of Quicksilver backstage at Winterland on 4/15/70.

  51. I gave Gary Duncan (who I knew and was friends with) a copy of the first Pete Frame Family Trees book with the Quicksilver family tree in it. Duncan said that the guy (Frame) did a pretty good job considering that Frame didn't talk to him, but he also mentioned that it wasn't completely correct. In other words, it could have been better if Frame had talked to Duncan. Duncan told me there were a few guys missing from the tree, although he didn't mention anyone specifically.

One person I know wasn't listed in either Pete Frame's family tree or on this page is bassist Dave Carter, ex-Country Weather bass player/singer. I'm not sure exactly when Carter was in the band, but it wasn't for very long, and obviously it had to have been when there was a spot available in the bass department.

Dave's a nice guy (I met him once). Very influenced by Jack Bruce. I know Duncan preferred bass players to play root lines as opposed to lead bass, so that probably explains (in part) why Carter didn't stay long and didn't record with the band.
