THE CHARLATANS FAMILY TREE - SHOWS LIST

This story is the work of Bruno Ceriotti. Help in putting this together has been provided by Michael Wilhelm, Brian Voorheis, Colin Hill, Michael Parrish, Dave Lee, Gray Newell, Corky Meyers, Bob Cuozzi, Los Angeles Free Press, The Daily Californian, The Daily Gater, and Phil Danner, to whom I'm most grateful. A gold star for the help goes to Mary Works, director of the Red Dog Saloon's documentary, that you can buy online here: RedDogSaloonFilm

Bill Cosby, the legendary black comedian that lived in a houseboat in nearby Sausalito at that time, asked the band to sit in on drums. Apparently he fancied himself a pretty good drummer but to play rock drums is a physically demanding thing compared to jazz which was the only music he had played before so he didn't do very well. That was the only time he played with them but he later worked up a comedy bit based on his humiliating experience sitting in with them (!!).

  3. I would like to make a brief post regarding gig Sons did at Winterland April 17th(?) 1969 where they wer on the bill with THE BAND I was fortunate enough to be in a special band "guest"area that was waaay up in an upper loft area overlooking the stage dead center no seats just a walking /standing area..anyway.I've never seen it mentioned in these Sons blogs but the show had one unique quirky aspect ie ,,Robbie Robertson of
The Band had a very high fever (104) and the band was in danger of having to CXL somewhere they came up with this old hypnotist guy in a suit that sat near Robbie on the stage and occasionally he jumped up in front of Robbie and "waived his arms and sort of "conducted" him
and they got thru the set Sons were great of course ..next to me watching all this was Nancy Strong (Al Strong's wife) Elvin Bishop in the
company of great soul singer Annie Sampson another great Sons gig

  5. The August 1997 Charlatans gigs were at the Sweetwater, Mill Valley, CA for two nights. The first time we'd played in years. Not sure about the dates...a Friday and Saturday. Austin DeLone and Lance Dickerson filled out the band.

  6. The Charlatans at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum had Freddie "Steady" Krc on drums. The Czech name Krc is pronounced "Kirch". Austin based Freddie Krc played guitar in his own somewhat Charlatans inspired band Shakin' Apostles and his regular gig was as Jerry Jeff Walker's drummer. He played in a punk band in the early '80s called the Explosives. The Explosives were well known from backing Roky Ericson.

  8. Austin DeLone is playing keyboards this weekend. DeLone had been in Eggs Over Easy who I saw in London on a number of occasions, and their country rock style and carefully chosen covers were hugely influential in England. Nick Lowe and many others credit Eggs Over Easy with the initial popularisation of "Pub Rock" in England that gave rise to the likes of Brinsley Schwartz and Bees Make Honey.
